There is no substitute for experience, and illustra-
tions and descriptions of clinical case material can
only be considered as a guide to practice. Never-
theless, it is possible to use such material to draw
the attention of the interested reader to a number
of items which may contribute to faster apprecia-
tion of the variety and peculiarities that will be
encountered in the performance of the sentinel
node detection procedure.
Here we present a selection of cases from our
routine experience. We hope that these are inter-
esting and helpful, and that they will complement
the other data and information provided in this
book. This case selection is not intended to be
all-inclusive or comprehensive but it will offer
a reasonable sample of the material one encount-
ers in a typical hospital environment. Each clin-
ical case has a teaching point. A short history
introduces the clinical problem and a selection
of image data completes the descriptive material.
The data are displayed on two juxtaposed pages
to assist the reader in readily absorbing the infor-
mation.
